Description
Grout is the material that is used to fill up the gap between tiles and support the tiles. It is classified into cementitious and reaction-resin types. The joint width of tiles is not just a matter of design preference. In accordance to BS 5385-3:2014, the width of the grout joint should not exceed the tile thickness. If wider joints are required to accommodate dimensional irregularities in the tiles, the provision is to maintain modular control or provide a decorative effect. The depth of the grout joints should be at least 2/3 the thickness of the tile.
At the moment, the market has 2 types; coloured grout cement and marble mastic. Mastic is a glue to fill it any hole in the stones with cavities of 3mm or above. As with glue, mastic is waterproof and provides a slight sheen after grinding and polishing, hence it is suitable for indoor surfaces. However for outdoor application, it is recommended to use grout cement as mastic can’t withstand the heat and weather conditions.
